A title is a non-physical representation of power, prestige and property. It is a way for characters to be known, without having to demonstrate their skills or worth. The three possible types are titles of influence and power, titles of fame and prestige, and titles of wealth and property. The various benefits of a title are explained below.

Purchasing a Title

There are two ways that a character can acquire or upgrade a title. They may be awarded by a game master during a game, or they may be purchased via player reward coins.

Table: Title Points by Rank

RankAdditional PointsBase Points

5725

Player titles cannot exceed rank 5. The titles page in the game master's guide has more information on what each rank represents.

Titles, and their inherent responsibilities and pitfalls, are very much a function of social interaction. For this reason, characters with titles have their title points modified by an amount equal to their Charisma modifier. A character with a negative modifier actually loses title points. Effectively, they are so poor at acting within the expectations of the title that they diminish its value.

Titles and Strongholds

Additionally, the benefits of owning a stronghold and possessing a title go hand in hand. A character with a stronghold gains a bonus number of title points equal to the total rank of all of their strongholds.

Designing a Title

When designing a title and its effects, try to keep in mind the scope of what the title represents. While the net result of a title might seem very generic, the specifics of where such benefits come from are what give it its flare and unique flavour. A local crime lord with the ability to influence politics and purchase magic items for a fraction of the price via bribery and threats is substantially different than a venerated war hero who is known for their piety and philanthropy, thus earning themselves great respect and affluence. Players and game masters are strongly encouraged to come up with not just a background for their titles, but a code of ethics that it represents, as well.

Types of Titles

The benefits of titles are broken down into three different types, though there is no such thing as a title that does not, in some way, encompass all three aspects.

Active, Passive and Quest Benefits

Titles can provide three types of benefits. Active benefits are accessed on demand, and can only be used if your game master allows it. Passive benefits are permanent and affect the entire party automatically. Quest benefits occur automatically every time the title holder completes a quest.

Active and passive title benefits are affected on a dual axis system where the rank of a given benefit enhances its scope, while the number of points you have in benefits from the other two categories determines its effectiveness.

Benefits of Influence and Power

These types of titles represent individuals with the ability to persuade others or in some other way affect their own personal agendas. Influence generally represents the ability to request assistance from another person or organization, whereas power is the ability to force compliance. For example, a judge.

The active and passive benefits listed below are affected by the number of benefit ranks purchased in titles of fame and prestige, and titles of wealth and property.

You have servants at your disposal that you can summon to perform various tasks for you. You gain a number of servants with a total level equal to your number of ranks in this benefit times the number of ranks this title awards in benefits of prestige or wealth. Each servant can be any monster or creature that your game master allows.
